Abrogating the Koran of Violent Verses

I Quote:

"With all due respect to your opinion, you should not try to insult the writer by saying :Either you are knowledgeable of Islam and want to be controversial, or you are ignorant of Islam and are suggesting something that is considered blasphemous in Islam and warrants a fatwa”

Here you are saying that a fatwa can change certain verses which contradict your position that only God or his prophet can abrogate Quranic verses; a Fatwa is a man-made religious declaration. A Fatwa from the highest Islamic authority is what I suggested in my article to abrogate all verses that call for violence against the other.

Despite the fact that God stated in (15:9) that He will protect all the verses in the Quran, many changes took place in the Quran.  If one examine Suyuti (Itqan, part 3, page 72) one would find that Aisha admitted that Surat Al-Ahzab used to have over 200 verses and now it contains only 73, so over 125 verses disappeared! Now if you read Al-Bukhari it says that the goat has eaten up some Quranic manuscripts which were stored under the bed according to Aisha. In  ". Sahih Muslim III, p. 912. Omar Bin El-Khattab admitted his removal of the stoning verse and also removed another verse that emphasizes the financial support for those who are hesitant about believing in Islam. Therefore it is not Allah alone who abrogates, but also the prophet, other men and goats"

SeifTurki: I make no apologies for what I have said, but you should read more carefully. I do not insult anyone, I was asking a simple question. I asked because it is obvious your understanding of abrogation of the Koran and mine differ like 'night from day.'

I "never implied" that a fatwa can change any verse in the Qur'an. I said, "Anyone who attempted to alter or abrogate the Quran will(should) receive a fatwa. i.e. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad has abrogated to Quran to create his own cult, the Ahmadi and what has happened to him and his followers? Today, Ahmadis are declared "Non-Muslim."

This is why your proposal, "what I suggested in my article to abrogate all verses that call for violence against the other."

Such abrogation would be worse than what the Ahmadis did. Do you know now many verses refer to "violence?" Let me make this observation, removing all verses relating to violence would mean there was only a fraction of the Quran left, i.e. it will no longer be the Quran and it will no longer be the manual of Islam, and the Sunnis and the Shias will be calling for your death. (Fatwa)

So your suggestion is unworkable and unacceptable to the Islamic world, and that is why I asked if you really appreciate what Islam is about. With out the violent verses, or even the verses relating to "JIHAD" THE QURAN BECOMES MEANINGLESS, POINTLESS.

PS: As it is impossible to discuss this topic as in most blogs or forums, and I have to resort to this method or posting blogs. I may not continue to post here any longer. I have reported my frustrations to the owners of this site and nothing has been do so far. I am not running away from you SeifTurki, but if find it almost impossible to have a decent discussion here. Go to FFI and post there, as that is more conducive to an exchange of ideas.

To mbplee,
I hope this article finds its way to you. I have read the symposium and unless I am wrong my idea of abrogation was not discussed at all. I believe that the Quran is replete with verses that call for violence that the entire Quran should be eradicated, but living most of my life in the Moslem world I understand very well that such an idea is impossible to achieve. As I got involved with many discussions with Islamic authority, I realized that there is a small opening in the field of abrogation that deserves to be addressed. There are different types of abrogation according to these Islamic authorities. One abrogation deals with removing the verse from the Quran but keeping its effect intact like the stoning verse which was removed by Omar Bin Khattab and he stated that the prophet approved. Another form of abrogation is by keeping the verse intact while abrogating its effect (ordinance). The third would be to remove the verse and its effect, like the verse that used to exist about those (half Moslems) who are reluctant and they should not receive any material support anymore. When I opened some discussion (very privately) with an Islamic authority the topic was how Moslems could claim that the Islam is the religion of peace, yet there are so many verses that call for violence against the other. His response was that all these verses that call for violence were needed before when Islam used force to spread its religion, but not anymore. So these verses, he said, should be placed in some historical perspective, but without removing them from the Quran. The reason for keeping them is because Allah stated in the Quran not to change the words. The summary of this discussion is that the present Quran should remain intact but with many verses effects should be abrogated. Otherwise the book will be reduced to pocket book.
To give you some examples; verse (5:3smilies/cool.gif which prescribes the penalty for stealing by cutting the hands and the limbs. It is very hard to find a Moslem country that uses this cruel penalty anymore, but without any official abrogation. You can call it abrogation by the silent majority, who simply accepted the change without raising any objection and they understood that may be such penalty was needed before with the absence of prison facilities. Modern age stopped Moslems from using An-Nahl (16:80) that tells Moslems that they can use the skin of animals to make their homes, and verse (6-97) that tells Moslems how to use the stars for finding directions in travel as both are replaced by cement and compasses. Since there are almost one billion Moslems who cannot read or understand Arabic, it would be a very dangerous act to change the Quran by by deleting these verses that call for violence, but might be acceptable to keep these verses intact while abrogating their effects. To implement this idea an official Islamic declaration ( call it a supreme Fatwa) could come out either from Al-Azhar or the international Islamic conference ( with the Azhar approval). In this manner the Quran remained intact but Moslems all over the world would be held responsible for all violent acts since the verses that support these actions have been abrogated in their effect.
